When They Fall in Love Darcy and Elizabeth in Italy Mary Lydon Simonsen 9780615790053 Books Reviews
P&P fan fiction is my guilty pleasure/escapist reading and I've read a wide array of them, from bad to good. I've read several of Ms. Simonsen's stories and I find they all fall into a similar traps She spends far too much time and column inches on things that do absolutely nothing to move the story forward or enrich the story. It's almost as if she wants to impress the reader with the research she's done on Italian history and festivals, even though it has nothing to do with Darcy and Elizabeth.
If you read Austen, very little of the exquisitely-written prose has to do with larger context or background. There are no descriptions of rooms or dresses, much less the history of medieval festivals that take place outside of the action of the book. Austen writes about the essence of her characters, their interactions and dialogue that sparks and pushes the narrative forward. Simonsen's long expositions just stop the narrative altogether.
There's so much potential in the premise of a chastened, spinster Elizabeth meeting up again with the widowed Darcy eight years after the disasterous first proposal in romantic Italy, but I feel like the potential never was realized.
If you're a fan of Mary Simonsen's other Pride and Prejudice re-imaginings (e.g., The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy, A Wife for Mr. Darcy, Becoming Elizabeth Darcy, Darcy on the Hudson, Mr. Darcy's Bite - to name a few of my favorites), I think you'll be delighted by her latest. I'll leave summarizing what happens in the story to some other reviewer. Instead I'll just say it's about second chances and the power of a love that doesn't diminish with time. This fresh take on Pride and Prejudice (with a bit of Persuasion thrown in) made me fall in love all over again with Darcy and Elizabeth. After all, isn't that why we read this type of story?
The descriptions of the Italian countryside and the art Elizabeth saw in Florence made me want to go out and immediately book a trip to Italy.
This story was a quick read. If you love travel and love Italy, this would be an excellent read. However, on the other hand, that gave it a travel-log-ish feel to it and soon overpowered our love story. The reader was bombarded with travel ventures, how they traveled, where they went, what they saw, the history of the area, the art, churches, statues, the spa areas, historical buildings, local legends, family histories and what went on during times of war.
The descriptions are marvelous. You can almost feel the sun on your face from the language and the scenes painted for the reader. I loved this part and it made me want to travel to these same places. It was apparent that a lot of research [or travel] had been completed in preparation for this writing.
“Love involves a peculiar unfathomable combination of understanding and misunderstanding.†Diane Arbus
Our variation was off canon from the first paragraph. We are half-a-dozen years after the disastrous Hunsford proposal. A refused Darcy had quickly married, had a child and was now a widower. For some reason, Elizabeth still maintained that mindset that she had at Netherfield during Jane’s illness [you know the one… that Darcy looked at her to find fault]. Well, this time she was mistaken again and she refused to listen to him, because she was so in love with him, she couldn’t bear for him to ask her to be a governess to his child. That’s it in a nutshell.
“Somewhere between love and hate lies confusion, misunderstanding and desperate hope.†Shannon L. Alder
This story was so frustrating that I wanted to bash Elizabeth over the head with her own reticule after I shook her till her teeth rattled. I mean WAKE up… lawd. I wanted to slit my own throat, I was that frustrated. We struggled with this for 90% of the story and then suddenly everything was HEA + an epilogue.
Rating PG-13 There were conversations that were a bit steamy. There were explicit descriptions of statues, art, the history of the local families, their love stories, life, affairs, mistresses, revenge and murder. 3.5-stars [round to 4-stars]
When They Fall in Love by Mary Lydon Simonsen is yet again another favorite!
After Elizabeth has refused Mr. Darcy, he marries another and is away to Europe. Jane and Mr. Bingley marry, but after the birth of her first child Jane finds herself weak and wanting the benefits of visiting the spas. Elizabeth travels with Charles and Jane across Europe acting as the governess to their daughter, but the group finds themselves in Florence with Mr. Darcy as their host. After losing his wife to illness and raising a daughter of his own, Darcy sees the opportunity to win Elizabeth once and for all.
The settings and history of this novel were a treat and I felt as if I was traveling and in some cases seeing things and experiencing them once again. I was traveling and falling in love all at the same time. What a refreshing read. Researched well and with no errors, the writing was smooth and flawless. At times I wanted to shake Elizabeth by the shoulders and tell her to wake-up each time she misunderstands Darcy! My heart was continually pierced again and again until he spells out his true feelings for her plainly to see. Loved it!
